Malta has 845 fishing vessels, harbour tugs and ferries, and more than 1,100 superyachts over 24 m on its flag. All of them depend on engines that start every time.

Since 01-05-2025 the Mediterranean has been a sulphur emission control area. Ships inside it must burn fuel with no more than 0.10 % sulphur, or clean their exhaust with a scrubber. The area does not limit nitrogen oxides, so IMO Tier III engines are not required here.

Lift-outs start in October and most boats are back in the water by mid-April. Winter berthing runs from October to May, so book lay-up and pre-season work early.
