Glossary

Engine terms, in plain English.

The terms you meet on dataplates, in manuals and on quotes, explained in plain English.

ATS
Automatic transfer switch. Moves the load from the mains to the generator when the power fails, and back again when it returns.
CES
Cummins Engineering Standard. Cummins’ own specifications, for example for engine oil (such as CES 20086) and coolant (CES 14603).
Core
The old part you return when you buy a ReCon exchange part, so it can be remanufactured in turn.
CPL
Control parts list. The number that records how an engine was configured at the factory. It is on the dataplate, next to the ESN.
Cruise Kit
Cummins’ pack of routine service parts for an Onan marine generator model, in one case.
Dataplate
The plate on the engine that carries the engine serial number (ESN), the CPL and the model.
DCA
A supplemental coolant additive, used with conventional and hybrid coolants to keep them protective. OAT coolants do not need it.
DPF
Diesel particulate filter. Traps soot in the exhaust. Most Stage V engines between 19 and 560 kW use one.
ECM
Electronic control module: the engine’s computer.
EN 15940
The European standard for paraffinic diesel fuels, including HVO.
ESN
Engine serial number. The unique number on a Cummins engine’s dataplate, and the fastest way to the right part.
Euro 6
The EU emission standard for road vehicles, including buses and trucks.
HVO
Hydrotreated vegetable oil. A renewable diesel made from waste fats and oils, which can be blended with diesel in any proportion.
IMO Tier II and III
International limits on nitrogen oxides from marine diesel engines. Tier III applies only in designated nitrogen oxide emission areas, which do not include the Mediterranean.
INSITE
Cummins’ PC software for reading fault codes and adjusting engine settings.
kVA and kW
kVA is apparent power and kW is real power. At the usual 0.8 power factor for generator sets, 100 kVA gives 80 kW.
Load bank test
Running a generator against an artificial load to prove it can carry its rated output.
Nameplate
The plate on a generator set that carries its model number, spec letter and serial number. On Onan QD marine sets it is on the side of the control box.
OAT coolant
Organic acid technology. A long-life coolant that does not need supplemental additives.
Prime power
A generator that is the main source of power, running for unlimited hours at a varying load.
QuickServe Online
Cummins’ online manuals and parts catalogues, searchable by engine serial number. Owners can register free.
Raw water
The sea water a marine engine or generator draws in to cool itself, through a strainer, a pump impeller and a heat exchanger.
ReCon
Cummins’ own remanufactured engines and parts, built to factory specification with a Cummins warranty.
SCR
Selective catalytic reduction. Cuts nitrogen oxides in the exhaust using diesel exhaust fluid (AdBlue).
Siphon break
A valve that stops sea water siphoning back into an engine or generator when the exhaust mixer sits below the waterline.
Sound shield
The insulated housing around a marine generator that cuts noise.
Spec letter
The last letter of a generator set’s model number. It changes with significant production changes and decides which parts fit.
Stage V
The current EU emission stage for non-road engines, such as those in construction machines, under Regulation (EU) 2016/1628.
Standby power
A generator that runs only when the mains power fails.
Sulphur ECA
An emission control area that limits fuel sulphur to 0.10 %. The Mediterranean has been one since 01-05-2025.
Zinc anode
A sacrificial zinc part that corrodes in place of the metal around it in the sea-water circuit, and is replaced on schedule.

Keep it running.
